Healthcare – Water Management Services

In response to a June 2, 2017 memorandum released by the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), Medicare-certified healthcare facilities must create a water management program to reduce risks associated with Legionella and other waterborne pathogens in their building water systems. (See our summary of this CMS memorandum here.) To ensure compliance with these new policies and protocols, Forensic Analytical Consulting Services (FACS) offers a comprehensive healthcare water management program for hospitals, critical access hospitals (CAHs) and long-term care (LTC) facilities. Requirements for New CMS Mandates

Medicare-certified facilities must institute preventative measures and have water management policies and procedures in place to minimize the growth and spread of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens. In order to comply with these new mandates, healthcare facilities are required to:

  • Conduct a risk assessment to identify where Legionella bacteria and other waterborne pathogens could grow and spread in water systems
  • Implement a water management plan that considers the practices outlined in the ASHRAE 188 Standard and the Centers for Disease Control Legionella Toolkit
  • Specify testing protocols and acceptable ranges for control measures, and document the results of testing and corrective actions taken when control limits are not maintained
